Brutal Rapist Jailed for Over 13 Years After Months of Terrorising Victim

A violent predator who subjected a woman to months of rape and savage assaults has been locked up for 13-and-a-half years. Ian David Vacciana, 57, from Newham, was sentenced at Snaresbrook Crown Court on Monday, 16 March.

Chilling Crimes Spanning Months

Vacciana was found guilty on 6 February of multiple brutal offences, including two counts of grievous bodily harm with intent, rape, attempted rape, and assault by beating. The terrifying ordeal began in February 2018 when he attempted to rape the victim in Newham.

Over the next year, between summer 2018 and spring 2019, Vacciana launched two serious assaults against the same woman. In July 2019, he raped her and violently attacked her again the following day.

Investigation and Arrest

  • Vacciana was finally arrested on 24 July 2019.
  • He shockingly tried to shift the blame on the victim, claiming she caused her own injuries.
  • Police charged him just two days later on 26 July.

Detective Praises Victim’s Courage

Detective Constable Sally Ogden, leading the inquiry, slammed Vacciana as “a violent, dangerous individual” who subjected the woman to an “absolutely terrible ordeal.”

“He has continued to deny the vile things he did to her. I’m pleased that the jury agreed with the overwhelming evidence we built against him and chose to convict him,” she said.

“I’d like to praise the victim for her courage in contacting the police and for supporting our investigation throughout. Her actions have helped to put a dangerous man behind bars where he is unable to cause harm to anyone else.”

“I hope the victim’s bravery inspires other victims of violence and sexual abuse to come forward. Contacting the police can be an extremely daunting thing to do, but rest assured, you will be provided with support and compassion.”
