UK Rail to Slash Services as Passenger Numbers Plunge

The government and UK rail firms have agreed to gradually cut train services nationwide. The move matches plummeting passenger demand but keeps essential journeys running.

Core Services Stay for Key Workers and Essential Travel

Operators will maintain vital routes to ensure workers get to their jobs, patients reach medical appointments, and goods keep flowing across the UK. The cuts come as people heed government advice to avoid unnecessary travel and limit social contact during the coronavirus outbreak.

Reducing services will also protect frontline rail staff, crucial for day-to-day operations. The changes kick in from Monday, 23rd March, with ongoing reviews and clear updates for passengers.

Freight and Keyworker Travel Prioritised

The plan safeguards freight routes, ensuring supermarkets stay stocked and power stations supplied. Secretary of State for Transport Grant Shapps said:

“We are taking decisive action to protect the public by reducing travel for now, while still keeping transport open for our keyworker heroes. Emergency services, NHS staff, and those attending medical appointments will still have the rail services they need.

“Our railways are vital to this country’s transport. We continue to work closely with the industry to protect operators in these challenging times.”

Rail Industry Responds to National Challenge

Robert Nisbet, Director at the Rail Delivery Group, representing train operators and Network Rail, added:

“These tough measures mean we can keep trains running longer, even with fewer staff. Railway workers are putting the country’s needs first, and their safety is paramount.”

“We’re closely watching demand and will adjust timetables as needed. Anyone travelling should check National Rail Enquiries before setting out.

Scotland and Wales Follow Suit

The Scottish and Welsh governments have adopted similar reductions. Transport for London has also cut services.

Scottish Transport Secretary Michael Matheson said:

“As we tackle coronavirus, passenger rail services will reduce, focusing on essential travel only. This helps freight prioritisation so vital supplies like medicines reach where they’re needed.”

“We’ve worked closely with rail unions to protect staff while keeping services running as much as possible.”

Welsh Minister Ken Skates stated:

“Railways in Wales are key for nurses, police, firefighters, and supply chains. From Monday, Transport for Wales will run a reduced timetable reflecting lower passenger numbers but maintaining travel for key workers.”

“This helps ensure enough staff are available to keep services running over the weeks and months ahead.”

Passengers urged to stay informed and only travel if absolutely necessary as the UK faces an unprecedented shift in rail services amid the ongoing health crisis.
