Jail for Thug Who Tried to Bite Off Cop’s Finger in Brutal Arrest Escape

Vicious Bite: Man Jailed for Trying to Chew Off Officer’s Finger to Dodge Arrest

A ruthless thug has been locked up after biting an officer’s finger so hard it caused serious injury – all to escape the long arm of the law.

Liam Byron’s Brutal Attack on PC Robinson

Liam Byron, 23, with no fixed address, was sentenced to two years and 28 days in jail at Woolwich Crown Court on April 30.

Byron admitted to escaping lawful custody and causing grievous bodily harm with intent to resist arrest.

The drama unfolded on February 2 when PC James Robinson and a special constable spotted Byron dropping a bag and hopping onto a train at Bexleyheath Station.

Officers found several handbags inside the bag, suspected to be stolen from a local store that very day. Confirmations from the store backed up their suspicions.

Chase and Struggle on the Rails

PC Robinson kept tabs on Byron after spotting him boarding another train at Welling Station with a companion.

Radioing for backup from the Met and British Transport Police, Robinson acted fast when the train reached Eltham Station.

He found Byron sitting on the carriage and moved in to arrest him for theft.

But Byron was no willing suspect. During the arrest, he broke free to swing handcuffs like a weapon, striking PC Robinson in the head.

A brutal fight broke out. In a shocking move, Byron bit down hard on PC Robinson’s finger in a sustained attack.

PC Robinson told the court: “I felt Byron increasing the pressure on my finger with his teeth, and I believe that he was fully intending to sever it.”

Escape, Capture and Court Victory

Despite the pain and injury—puncture wounds, permanent scarring, and nerve damage—PC Robinson managed to restrain Byron.

Byron finally let go when the train stopped at Kidbrooke Station, then fled with his mate. PC Robinson gave chase but lost them.

Two days later, cops found Byron sleeping rough in Welling Town Centre, still smirking after his violent outburst.

While in custody, Byron boasted: “You know I can kick off if I want to – ask James Robinson about it.”

Detectives tried to get Byron to talk but he refused, leading to charges of theft, escape from custody, and grievous bodily harm with intent.

PC Robinson was back at work in a restricted role the next day and has since made a full recovery.

PC Robinson Speaks Out

“I want to thank the detectives from SE CID for building a strong case which forced Byron to plead guilty and get a jail sentence,” said PC Robinson of Welling Safer Neighbourhoods Team.

“I never expected someone to try and bite my finger off during an arrest. In my six and a half years as a police officer, this is the worst assault I’ve faced.”

“Aside from the scars and nerve damage, the biggest worry was whether I caught anything from the bite. Thankfully, tests so far look clear, but I won’t know for sure until August.”

“This sentence sends a clear message: violence against officers won’t be tolerated.”
