Blaze Rips Through First Floor Flat in Kennington

Eight fire engines and 60 firefighters raced to a huge flat fire on Otto Street, Kennington, today.

Flat Destroyed But Fire Contained

The entire first-floor flat was badly damaged by flames. Firefighters battled hard to stop the blaze spreading to neighbouring flats, Station Commander Ned Alexander confirmed.

“Firefighters have worked exceptionally hard to get this flat fire under control. The whole of the first floor flat is damaged by the blaze but crews have prevented it from spreading further,” said Alexander.

Residents Evacuate as 999 Calls Flood In

  • About 100 people self-evacuated from the building.
  • Some residents stayed safely inside their flats.
  • The Fire Brigade received 60 emergency calls in the early stages of the fire.
  • Thankfully, no injuries have been reported.

The fire broke out at 12:31pm and was under control by 1:17pm, with crews from Lambeth and nearby stations responding swiftly.

Investigation Underway

The cause of the blaze is now being probed by fire investigators.
