UK Races to Beirut with Rescue Dogs and £5M Aid After Devastating Blast
The UK has sprung into action following the massive explosion at Beirut Port that ravaged the city, injuring thousands and leaving widespread destruction in its wake. London has offered urgent support, including elite search and rescue teams with specially trained dogs, to help locate survivors amid the rubble.
Special Forces and Dogs Deployed to Search for Survivors
In a swift response, the UK has proposed deploying its expert search and rescue teams equipped with highly trained dogs. These canine units are skilled in sniffing out survivors trapped beneath debris, making them invaluable in disaster zones like Beirut.
£5 Million Emergency Aid and Medical Teams Ready to Roll
Following a high-level call between Lebanon’s Prime Minister Hassan Diab and UK Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab, the UK announced an emergency aid package of up to £5 million. This funding aims to provide humanitarian relief for those made homeless by the blast.
The UK has also pledged enhanced support for the Lebanese Armed Forces, including medical assistance, strategic air transport, and crucial engineering and communications support to bolster the government’s disaster response.
Additionally, an Emergency Medical Team (EMT) with clinical advisors is ready for deployment. These teams bring rapid medical and surgical expertise from NHS and non-NHS specialists, offering vital help on the ground.
Officials Pledge Solidarity with Lebanon
Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said: “This was a devastating explosion which has caused enormous suffering and damage. The UK is a long-standing friend of Lebanon and the Lebanese people and will stand with them in their hour of need. We have offered immediate direct support including search and rescue, emergency medical assistance and up to £5m in humanitarian aid.”
International Development Secretary Anne-Marie Trevelyan added: “We have all been shocked by the scenes of devastation and suffering in Beirut. My heart goes out to all those who have been affected by this tragedy and who have lost loved ones. The UK stands ready to support the people of Lebanon in their time of need and has offered to send medics and rescue workers to treat those injured.”
Blast Devastation Hits Amid Lebanon’s Crisis
The explosion, which registered 4.5 on the Richter scale and was felt as far away as Cyprus, has dealt a searing blow to Lebanon, already grappling with economic turmoil, the coronavirus pandemic, and hosting over 1.5 million Syrian refugees.
The UK’s long-term partnership with Lebanon focuses on humanitarian aid, security, and stability amid the ongoing Syria crisis. Since 2011, the UK has poured nearly £700 million into relief and development, supporting everything from sanitation to education and job creation for both Lebanese and Syrian communities.
The latest aid and rescue offer underscores the UK’s commitment to standing firmly with Lebanon in this darkest hour.
