HS2 Protesters Fined After Blocking Road for Nearly Two Hours
Two Men Convicted Over Anti-HS2 Roadblock
Iain Edward Oliver, 40, from Uxbridge, and James Ruggles, 23, from Essex, faced justice at High Wycombe Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday (13/10). Both were found guilty of wilful obstruction of a highway following a February protest.
Protesters Halt Work, Cause Long Delay
The pair deliberately blocked Denham Court Drive on 11 February during an anti-HS2 protest. Refusing to budge, they caused a staggering 1 hour and 47 minutes delay over just 750 metres.
Fines and Court Costs Hit the Wallet
Despite Ruggles skipping the hearing, the court fined each man £200 and slapped on £300 court costs. Police arrested them shortly after the roadblock.
Police Send Strong Warning to Protesters
“These two men are the first people to be convicted in connection with an anti-HS2 protest in the country,” a Thames Valley Police spokesperson said.
“We will support peaceful protests but also take firm action against those causing obstruction.”
