Protester Climbs Big Ben in Daring Stunt – Faces Heavy Punishment
Benjamin Atkinson, 44, from Ambleside, Cumbria, has been hit with 250 hours of unpaid work and slapped with fines totalling £865 after scaling the iconic Queen Elizabeth Tower—aka Big Ben—during a protest.
Climbs Big Ben in Fancy Dress for Live Radio Stunt
On 18 October 2019, Atkinson was taking part in a demonstration outside the Palace of Westminster when he shocked onlookers by climbing over fences and hauling himself up the scaffolding surrounding Big Ben.
He spent several hours perched on the tower, hoping to broadcast live on the radio while dressed in costume. Specialist police protest removal teams spent hours negotiating his descent.
Arrested and Charged Under Security Law
Once down, Atkinson was arrested and charged with trespassing on a protected site, a serious offence under Section 128 of the Serious Organised Crime and Police Act 2005.
On 25 November, he was convicted and sentenced to:
- 250 hours of unpaid community work
- A victim surcharge of £90
- £775 costs to the Crown Prosecution Service
Police Warn of Dangers and Consequences
PC Samantha Lloyd, Public Order Command officer, said: “This was a dangerous and reckless act. It could have ended very differently—for Atkinson and the officers involved.”
“Our specially trained teams handled the situation expertly, ensuring a safe resolution. Trespassing on protected sites is a serious crime, and Atkinson now faces the consequences with hefty fines and community service.”
