Man Jailed for Brutal Upholland Road Stabbing Murder
At around 4pm on Wednesday 20 May 2020, police rushed to Upholland Road in Orrell following reports of a stabbing. Officers found 32-year-old Melissa Belshaw seriously injured at a property. Despite efforts to save her, Melissa was pronounced dead at the scene.
Another man who tried to intervene was also attacked, sustaining serious upper body injuries. He was rushed to hospital for treatment.
Andrew Wadsworth Caught and Convicted
Shortly after the attack, Andrew Wadsworth from Cranfield Road, Wigan, was arrested. He was charged and appeared in court. During the trial, Wadsworth was found guilty of both murder and attempted murder. He had already pleaded guilty to carrying a bladed article and assaulting police officers twice.
Life Behind Bars: 32 Years Minimum
On Thursday 3 December 2020, Manchester Crown Court sentenced Wadsworth to life imprisonment with a minimum of 32 years behind bars. Senior Investigating Officer Duncan Thorpe said:
“Our thoughts remain with Melissa’s loved ones – particularly her daughter, who witnessed this horrific attack. They are understandably devastated. Specialist officers have supported them throughout our investigation and prosecution.”
