Man Held After Shocking Stabbing at Marks & Spencer

Stabbing Sparks Panic in Town Centre

A 57-year-old local man is behind bars after a dramatic stabbing inside the Marks & Spencer store on St James Street. Police were called at around 9.30am on Wednesday, December 2nd following reports of the attack.

The suspect was initially arrested on suspicion of attempted murder but has now been detained for 28 days under Section 2 for a mental health assessment.

Two Women Hospitalised, One Remains in Care

Two women – a shop assistant in her 40s and a member of the public in her 60s – suffered stab wounds. Both were rushed to hospital. One has since been discharged, while the other is still receiving treatment.

The attacker was held at the scene by brave members of the public and store staff until police arrived. A knife was recovered from the scene.

Police Assure Public: No Terror Links

Supt Stasia Osiowy of East Police stressed the attack is not linked to terrorism. “We are keeping an open mind about the suspect’s motive,” she said. “While the injuries were serious, thankfully they are not life-threatening, and both women are receiving support from specially trained officers.”

The store reopened the following morning with extra high-visibility police patrols still out to reassure shoppers and businesses.
