Driver Who ‘Mowed Down’ Six Men Outside Pub Jailed for Attempted Murder
Horrific Attack After Christmas Party in Leeds
Andrew Wrigglesworth, 50, of Shirley Avenue, Birstall, has been sentenced at Leeds Crown Court after being found guilty of six counts of attempted murder. The shocking incident happened outside a pub on Bradford Road on December 22 last year, following a works Christmas party. Officers from the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team labelled his actions ‘horrendous’ and ‘barely conceivable’ — and said Wrigglesworth showed no real remorse.
Deliberate Car Attack on Footpath
The jury found Wrigglesworth guilty in August of deliberately driving his red Audi A4 convertible at six men after a scuffle outside the members’ club. He mounted the pavement and targeted the men, all on foot, before speeding off in his badly damaged vehicle. Police later found him at his home.
One Victim Suffers Life-Changing Injuries
The worst-hit victim, a 43-year-old man from Cleckheaton, suffered life-changing injuries. Detective Inspector Andrew Cass, senior investigating officer, called the attack “absolutely horrendous” and welcomed the heavy sentence handed down.
“It is barely conceivable that someone would attempt to carry out such an outrageous and brutal act, especially against their own colleagues. His actions resulted in six men being literally mown down, with one man injured for life.” — Detective Inspector Andrew Cass
DI Cass added: “The jury decided Wrigglesworth intended to murder all six victims that night. He has never shown remorse, but I hope this lengthy sentence brings some comfort to those affected.”
