Thug Jailed Over Brutal Attack on 87-Year-Old Pensioner in Westminster

A violent yob who mugged an elderly woman in Westminster has been locked up for over six years.

Collin Reid’s Savage Assault

Collin Reid, 42, was sentenced to six years and four months at Southwark Crown Court on Tuesday, 2 March. He pleaded guilty to robbery back in November 2020.

The horrific attack happened on 7 July 2020 when the 87-year-old victim had just finished her shopping on Tottenham Court Road and was making her way home near Charing Cross Road.

As she entered the gated area of her home, Reid tried to snatch her handbag. The bag was slung diagonally across her body, making it hard to grab. Frustrated, Reid shoved her to the ground and kicked her in the back as she lay there.

Witnesses Step In, Snap Crucial Photos

Four passersby heard the woman’s screams and stopped to help. One quick-thinking witness snapped photos of Reid, which became key evidence in court.

Despite her frail age, the victim suffered serious injuries to her arm, knees, and back. Reid then rifled through her bag, stealing two purses before ditching it and fleeing.

Police Crack Down, Reid Caught

Westminster detectives arrested Reid on 16 September 2020 in Guildford Street, WC1. Initially pleading not guilty, Reid flipped his plea to guilty when faced with overwhelming evidence.

“The victim, although physically very frail, has been very strong throughout this ordeal,” said Detective Constable James Brooks from the Met’s Central West Basic Command Unit. “The psychological scars she carries will last far beyond her physical recovery.”

“Thanks to the brave witnesses who helped capture Reid and rushed to assist the victim. I hope they find some justice knowing he’ll now spend significant time behind bars for his callous crime.”

Reid’s heartless attack has delivered justice for a vulnerable pensioner and sent a clear message: violent robbers will face harsh punishment.
