Dog Owners Warned: Keep Pets on Leads as Deadly Blue-Green Algae Threatens Lakes and Rivers
With British Summertime upon us, pet owners are being urged to keep dogs on leads around lakes and rivers. Why? Toxic blue-green algae — a silent killer lurking in warmer waters — is on the rise. This nasty toxin can prove fatal for your furry friends.
Veterinary Alert: Blue-Green Algae Dangers
The British Veterinary Association (BVA) has issued a stark warning. Blue-green algae, also called cyanobacteria, produces powerful toxins. Even tiny amounts pose serious health threats not only to pets, but also livestock and birds.
Dogs commonly get poisoned by:
- Drinking contaminated water
- Licking algae from their fur post-swim
- Contact with algae washed up on lake or river banks
BVA President Urges Vigilance
“Many dogs love a dip to cool off in this weather, but we strongly advise keeping them on a lead near water with algal blooms,” said BVA President Justine Shotton. “Most blooms are toxic and can’t be spotted by eye, so better safe than sorry.”
“Watch for symptoms like vomiting, diarrhoea, drooling, confusion, breathing trouble, seizures, or blood in stools. They can strike within minutes or hours, causing severe liver damage—often fatal if untreated.”
There’s no antidote for blue-green algae toxins, so quick veterinary help is a must to save your pet.
