150 Gather in Brighton’s Valley Gardens Despite Lockdown
Police were alerted to a crowd of around 150 people in Brighton’s Valley Gardens shortly after 6pm on Saturday, March 13. Officers quickly moved in to break up the gathering amid ongoing Covid-19 restrictions.
Enforcement Underway as Police Tackle Lockdown Breach
Officers explained the government’s coronavirus rules and urged the crowd to disperse. When some refused, police took necessary and proportionate enforcement action. A 20-year-old man was arrested for failing to comply with directions aimed at controlling the virus. He was taken into custody.
Additionally, eight Fixed Penalty Notices were handed out for breaches of Covid regulations.
Balancing Public Health with Women’s Safety Message
Sussex Police acknowledged the crowd’s aim: to mourn Sarah Everard’s death in London and highlight women’s safety concerns. “We absolutely understand the importance of this message,” police said. “Everyone should feel safe walking our streets, and we know many do not.”
“Many women have experienced violence, abuse or harassment, and this is not acceptable. Protecting our communities is a top priority,” Sussex Police added.
Covid Rules Remain Strict Amid Ongoing Health Emergency
The force reminded the public that we are still in a public health emergency. Large gatherings remain illegal under Covid-19 rules. A High Court ruling on March 12 confirmed vigils cannot bypass lockdown restrictions.
Police thanked those who found safe, alternative ways to express their feelings during this emotional time.
