Kent Police, working with Metropolitan and Essex forces, swooped on criminal gangs stealing catalytic converters in a major crackdown on Tuesday 23 March 2021.

Three Men Arrested Over Dozens of Thefts

  • Two men, aged 18 and 24, were arrested in Folkestone, suspected of involvement in up to 30 thefts.
  • A 27-year-old man was detained in Maidstone on suspicion of stealing additional car parts.
  • All three have been released on bail until 13 April, pending further investigations.

Shipping Container Full of Stolen Metal Seized in Essex

Kent Police also helped search a shipping container on the Essex coast. It was packed with stolen metal and car parts allegedly destined for the Ivory Coast.

Detective Chief Inspector Matt Talboys from Kent Police’s Crime Squad said: “Working alongside our partners, we are relentlessly pursuing those involved in organised catalytic converter thefts. “Victims are targeted without warning, facing costly repairs and inconvenience. “Motorists can rest assured we are following every lead and performing regular patrols in hotspot areas. “We also collaborate closely with scrap metal dealers to catch suspects.”

How to Protect Your Car From Thieves

Vehicle owners can take steps to defend against catalytic converter theft:

  • Contact your car manufacturer—many sell clamps and security cages to deter thieves.
  • Security-mark and register the metal shell of your converter to help police recover it if stolen.
  • Park in a locked garage or busy, well-lit areas.
  • Consider installing high-quality CCTV cameras at home.

Stay vigilant and safeguard your ride from rising converter crime!
