Royal Marine Veteran’s 101st Birthday Bash Goes Ahead Amid Lockdown
Maurice Churchward from Walmer missed out on his 100th birthday party in March 2020 due to the first UK lockdown. But today, as he turns 101, the community has rallied to give the former serviceman a birthday to remember—safely from his garden.
From War Hero to Police Officer
Maurice served as a Royal Marine during World War II and later in Korea. After hanging up his military boots, he joined the Metropolitan Police, serving until retirement.
Community Pulls Out All the Stops
- Morning: Doorstep delivery of birthday cards and a special rendition of “Happy Birthday” from a trumpeter of the Royal Marines Association Deal Branch.
- Lunch: A birthday cake from The Baking Fairy in Deal, organised by Dover District Council, plus more cards handed over by council officers.
- Special Touch: A heartfelt video message from the Royal Marines Band Service.
- Evening: Bagpipes played on Maurice’s doorstep by a former Black Watch member.
Brinley Hill, Head of Community Services at Dover District Council, said: “It’s great to see the community coming together to help Maurice celebrate his 101st birthday, particularly after the aborted plans due to the first lockdown in March 2020. We were determined to help create a 101st birthday for Maurice to remember, and to give thanks for his remarkable service to the country both as a Royal Marine and a police officer.”
