Two fire crews rushed to Morrisons in Lake, Isle of Wight, after a gas leak triggered an emergency in the early hours of Saturday.

Night Staff Evacuate Before Firefighters Arrive

The supermarket, closed to customers at the time, saw its night staff self-evacuate ahead of the fire service arrival. Fire crews from Sandown and Shanklin were called to the scene just after 3.20am on Newport Road to tackle the leaking gas coming from a refrigeration unit.

Firefighters, kitted out in breathing apparatus, quickly isolated the gas supply and ventilated the affected area. Their rapid response prevented any major incident.
