Shock After Plymouth Shooting Sparks Urgent Gun Law Review
Public anxiety has soared following the tragic shooting in Plymouth, where five people were killed before the gunman took his own life. The Home Office has launched a rapid review of firearms licensing rules and will soon roll out new statutory guidance for all police forces across England and Wales.
Over Half a Million Licensed Gun Owners
As of the latest data from 2020/21, more than 565,000 people in England and Wales hold firearms licences or shotgun certificates. These licences last for five years and must be renewed to keep a firearm legally.

Police can revoke licences instantly if holders fail to meet licensing conditions. Meanwhile, Police and Crime Commissioners want public input to shape future licensing rules and processes.
