Gal Gadot Admits Her Pandemic Singalong Was a Flop

Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot has opened up about the infamous celebrity singalong video from March 2020 — admitting it missed the mark despite good intentions.

From Lockdown Hit to Online Miss

The video, which features big names like Natalie Portman and Jamie Dornan, racked up over two million views on Instagram. Gadot, 36, sang the intro to John Lennon’s 1971 classic “Imagine” before a star-studded cast took turns singing the tune. The message? “We are in this together, we will get through it together.”

But the timing was all wrong. Released just before the UK’s first official lockdown, it quickly faced backlash for seeming tone deaf at a time of rising fear and uncertainty.

‘Pure Intentions’ But Poor Timing

“The pandemic was in Europe and 1 before it came (to the US) in the same way,” Gadot told InStyle. “I was seeing where everything was headed. But (the video) was premature. It wasn’t the right timing, and it wasn’t the right thing. It was in poor taste.”

“All pure intentions, but sometimes you don’t hit the bull’s-eye.”

Turning Criticism into Comedy

After the backlash, Gadot didn’t shy away. Instead, she poked fun at herself by singing “Imagine” again while accepting a prize at the Elle Women in Hollywood awards.

“It just felt right, and I don’t take myself too seriously,” she said. “I felt like I wanted to take the air out of it, so that (event) was a delightful opportunity to do that.”

Star-Studded Line-Up

The singalong featured an all-star cast including Sia, Pedro Pascal, Zoe Kravitz, Chris O’Dowd, Leslie Odom Jr, Eddie Benjamin, Ashley Benson, Lynda Carter, Jimmy Fallon, Will Ferrell, Norah Jones, Kaia Gerber, Cara Delevingne, Annie Mumolo, Labrinth, and Maya Rudolph.
