Camberley Van Driver Jailed for Fatal Overtaking Crash

Aron Hicks, 28, from Mytchett Road, Camberley, has been locked up for over three years after a deadly overtaking blunder. The Oxford Crown Court sentenced him to three years and four months behind bars, plus a driving ban stretching nearly four years.

Dangerous Overtake on Blind Hill

On the morning of May 4 last year, Hicks was driving his white Ford Transit van along the A417 between Half Penny Lane and Aston Tirrold. After safely overtaking one vehicle, he made a fatal mistake on a second attempt.

Approaching the crest of a hill, Hicks pulled out again, despite not being able to see oncoming traffic. His van smashed head-on into a green Honda Civic driven by 78-year-old Brian Hunt.

Mr Hunt suffered fatal injuries and died later that day in hospital. Hicks escaped with minor injuries after his van overturned.

Investigation and Sentencing

Charged on February 17 this year following an inquiry by the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, Hicks pleaded guilty on June 13. Senior Investigating Officer Sergeant Dom Mahon revealed footage of the crash at the family’s request, showing Hicks’ reckless risk-taking.

“Hicks was rushing that morning and decided to take a risk, which tragically cost Brian Hunt his life,” said Sgt Mahon.

“This shocking dash-cam footage clearly shows how impatient driving can be fatal.”

“My thoughts are with Mr Hunt’s family and friends, who have shown incredible patience and resolve during our investigation.”

A Family Devastated by Reckless Driving

Hicks’ irresponsible choices have shattered a family and left long-lasting scars on all involved. The tragic consequences of his dangerous overtaking serve as a chilling reminder: impatience behind the wheel can be deadly.
