A devastating gas explosion ripped through a house on Dulwich Road, Kingstanding, last night, killing a woman and leaving a man in life-threatening condition. Firefighters and emergency crews raced to the scene shortly after 8.30pm after receiving frantic calls.
Scene of Devastation: House Destroyed, Neighbours Damaged
West Midlands Fire Service Incident Commander Martin Ward-White confirmed: “When we arrived, it was clear that a gas explosion had occurred.” One house was completely destroyed while at least five neighbouring homes suffered severe damage. Nearby cars have also been affected.
West Midlands Police reported that Dulwich Road and surrounding streets remain closed as investigations continue. Emergency teams including six fire engines, three ambulances, and specialist rescue units are still on duty.
Heroic Rescue Amid Flames and Rubble
Local residents jumped into action amid the chaos, risking their own lives to pull a badly injured man from the burning wreckage.
“Everyone was watching, the house was on fire, nobody was going in, so we went in, me and about a dozen others and pulled a man out,” said one witness, who wished to remain anonymous. “The dust from the loft insulation was burning around us.”
The man’s cousin praised the rescuers as “heroes” on social media for their selfless bravery.
Emergency Services and Gas Experts on the Case
West Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed the man was rushed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital’s major trauma centre with serious injuries. Four other men were treated for minor injuries and released.
Cadent Gas teams swiftly arrived to assist alongside the fire service, police, National Grid and ambulance crews.
A Cadent spokesperson said: “It is premature to speculate on the cause. Our thoughts are with everyone who has been affected. If anyone smells gas, it is critical they call the national gas emergency service immediately on 0800 111 999.”
Community in Shock After Night of Terror
Local city councillor Rick Payne described hearing the “massive explosion” and recognizing it as a gas blast. He confirmed multiple houses were damaged, with one property entirely obliterated.
West Midlands Fire Service reassured the public they are working closely with partners to manage the incident and investigate the cause.
The investigation continues as the community reels from this tragic and shocking explosion.
