Operation Brock Stays Put as Cross-Channel Chaos Continues
Operation Brock will remain in place for now to manage heavy freight traffic to Dover and Eurotunnel, the Kent Resilience Forum (KRF) confirmed today. With ferry capacity still slashed, especially at Dover, the M20 contraflow system continues to control the flow of lorries heading for the continent.
P&O Ferries Still Struggling to Get Back on Track
Though one P&O ferry is back in action, there’s no firm date for all sailings to resume from Dover. This leaves Kent stuck with a high risk of disruption, forcing the ongoing use of Operation Brock.
Authorities Keep a Close Eye on the M20 Traffic Scheme
The KRF, including National Highways, Kent Police, and Kent County Council, say they’re reviewing the traffic management plans regularly. The next big reassessment is scheduled for around Tuesday, 10 May.
Simon Jones, KRF Strategic Planning Lead, said: “We know the M20 contraflow puts a strain on local residents. This decision wasn’t made lightly. But with ferry services still limited, we need to keep ready to manage freight traffic to avoid chaos in Kent. Thanks to residents and businesses for their patience; we’ll review the situation again next week.”
Nicola Bell, National Highways Regional Director (South East), added: “Keeping Brock active lets us quickly tighten controls on EU-bound freight when needed. Removing the contraflow only to reinstall it during a traffic nightmare would cause more disruption. Our priority is helping people complete journeys while minimising impact on local communities.”
Drivers Urged to Plan Ahead Amid Ongoing Delays
For now, all EU-bound freight must stick to the M20, joining the coastbound carriageway at Junction 8 and following direction signs. Drivers in Kent are urged to:
- Check routes before travelling
- Allow extra time for journeys
- Pack essentials like food, drinks, and medicines in case of delays
Operation Brock is set to remain for at least another week as authorities keep a close watch on cross-Channel traffic.
