Inferno Erupts at Bedford Flats After Gas Explosion
A terrifying gas explosion sparked a massive blaze at a block of flats on Redwood Grove in Bedford, forcing a large-scale evacuation. Eyewitnesses described the scene as an “inferno,” with flames engulfing the entire building and part of the roof collapsing.
Residents Flee as Flames Rage
One frantic resident reported seeing a person leap from a second-floor window to escape the searing smoke and fire. Emergency services rushed to the three-storey block, housing 20 flats, battling the “major incident,” as declared by Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service.
Three Hospitalised, Including Firefighter

- Three admitted overall— one airlifted to Addenbrooke’s Hospital with leg injuries
- Two treated at Bedford South Wing Hospital for smoke inhalation, including a firefighter
Bedfordshire Police confirmed officers, firefighters, and ambulances remained at the scene well after midday Monday. “The fire has engulfed the entire building, causing a large portion of the roof to collapse,” they said.
Emergency Support and School Evacuated
Bedford Borough Council opened an emergency centre at the John Bunyan Centre for evacuated residents needing help. An adjacent block of flats was also cleared as a precaution while teams worked swiftly to get people back home.
Nearby Shackleton Primary School was evacuated due to the fire’s proximity. Headteacher Andy George confirmed all children are safe and the school will reopen tomorrow.
The East of England Ambulance Service sent multiple resources, including a hazardous response team and Magpas Air Ambulance, highlighting the severity of the incident.
