Red Funnel Staff Set to Strike, Disrupting Southampton-Cowes Ferries

Up to 120 Red Funnel workers are gearing up for strike action over pay disputes. The walkouts kick off on July 27 and will hit for 11 days throughout August, slashing ferry services between Southampton and Cowes.

Reduced Ferry Trips Amid Island Travel Chaos

Normally running 19 daily round trips, Red Funnel will cut this to just 12 on strike days. The strikes are planned for August 1, 3, 5, 9, 11, 15, 17, 19, 23, 26, and 29. Though the Red Jet service will run unaffected, many passengers face disruption during peak summer travel.

Red Funnel insists it can still keep essential supplies and connections flowing. “We’re confident that we’ll be able to keep the Island connected and supplied as usual,” the company said. They also confirmed that half the dates between July 27 and August 29 will operate as normal.

Pay Dispute Sparks Strike Ahead of Cowes Week

The Unite union claims staff are furious over a mere 4.5% pay rise offer, which later rose to 6.5% for the lowest-paid but still falls short of soaring living costs. “The offer is far below the real cost of living,” said Unite, calling the strike action the only option left.

The timing hits just before the famous Cowes Week sailing regatta from July 30 to August 6, threatening travel for holidaymakers and event participants.

Red Funnel Promises Priority for Essential Travel

Red Funnel vows to prioritise passengers travelling for work, education, and medical reasons, plus critical deliveries like fuel, food, and medical supplies.

Passengers booked on strike-affected days should watch for updates via text or email. “If you have a booking during the impacted date range and have not heard from us by 20 July, please contact us,” the company advised.
