Stormzy Opens Up About Growing Up Amid Knife Crime in Croydon
Stormzy, the South London rapper born Michael Omari, has revealed how violent attacks were just considered ‘normal’ in his Croydon youth—until further education changed his perspective at 17.
Shocking Realisation at School
During a classroom moment, Stormzy peeled off his hard hat revealing a head scar. When asked how he got it, he saw “a look of horror” from his classmates—mainly white kids. That’s when it hit him: being stabbed isn’t normal.
“There were 17 white kids in the room. I had a scar on my head, and someone asked, ‘What happened?'” Stormzy explained. “Of course, being stabbed is shocking. Of course, it’s not normal.”
Stormzy Blasts Britain’s Lack of Diversity
The grime star took aim at Britain’s narrow cultural image. “Britain is not just One Direction and Little Mix,” he stressed, pointing out the need for more diversity.
Tragic Knife Crime Claims Life of Childhood Friend
Stormzy’s grim experience hits home after the stabbing murder of his childhood friend, Bjorn Brown, 23. Attacked by two men in Thornton Heath’s Kelling Gardens, Bjorn tried to escape on his bike but collapsed and later died in hospital.
Stormzy took to Twitter to mourn:
“Woke up to hear a childhood friend of mine is no longer with us. R.I.P Bugz.”
A candlelit vigil was held at the spot where Bjorn was found, marking a sad reminder of the knife crime epidemic plaguing communities.
