Martial Arts Coach Jailed for 28 Years Over 30-Year Abuse Spree

A former martial arts instructor from Devon has been locked up for 28 years after a shocking 30-year campaign of sexual abuse against young girls came to light.

Derek Hodder’s Sickening Crimes Exposed

Derek Hodder, 66, of Garlic Rae, Brixham, was found guilty at Exeter Crown Court of 33 counts of rape, eight offences of sexual assault, four of sexual activity with a child, and multiple indecency charges.

The abuse took place between 1986 and 2018, often in Hodder’s home or his vehicles. Victims were lured with offers of massages that quickly escalated into horrifying sexual abuse.

Many girls met Hodder through a Devon martial arts club, where he groomed and manipulated them with gifts and alcohol. Despite his denial throughout the seven-week trial, jurors convicted him on all counts.

Victims Speak Out, Judge Slams Predator

Seven victim impact statements revealed the lasting trauma, including PTSD, anxiety, and depression. One brave victim declared, “I am proud to have broken the cycle of abuse and found closure.”

“I am acutely aware of the dreadful impact on the victims,” said Judge Timothy Rose. “They gave an eloquent and powerful voice to the harm caused.”

Hodder will serve a minimum of 18 years and eight months before any chance of release.

Police Praise Courage of Victims and Warn Others

Detective Inspector Jerry Godfrey, lead investigator, said: “This sentencing reflects the gravity of Hodder’s crimes. He abused his position and shattered the safe spaces of vulnerable girls. I commend the victims for their bravery and hope this brings them some comfort.”

Detective Superintendent Sharon Donald added: “Hodder is a manipulative, predatory paedophile who used his role as a sports instructor to satisfy sick desires. This sentence recognises the pain he caused and should warn off others. We will investigate abuse no matter when it happened.”

Police urge any victims to come forward and seek help, promising specialist support every step of the way.
