Havant Man Jailed for Sick Child Sex Crimes
A 70-year-old Havant man, Trevor McCurdy, has been slammed with a 13-year prison sentence for sexually abusing two young girls.
Jury Convicts Despite Fugitive Drama
McCurdy, of Almond Close, faced Portsmouth Crown Court on Thursday (24 November). The jury found him guilty of multiple child sex offences dating back to the late 1980s through to 2021.
The charges include:
- Four counts of assaulting a girl under 13 by touching
- Two counts of assault by penetration on a girl under 13
- Three counts of indecent assault on a girl under 16
Originally, McCurdy pleaded guilty to two offences but denied the rest. Shocking court drama unfolded when he fled just two days into his May trial. Despite his disappearance, the jury found him guilty in absentia.
Police Hunt Ends with Arrest in Brighton
Hampshire Constabulary’s Eastern Child Abuse Investigation Team launched a major manhunt after McCurdy vanished. Public appeals helped track him down in Brighton last October. He was promptly arrested and thrown back into custody.
Now behind bars, McCurdy is also slapped with a lifetime Sexual Harm Prevention Order.
Detective Praises Victims’ Courage, Calls for Others to Speak Out
“Trevor McCurdy abused the trust of his young victims in the worst possible way,” said Detective Constable Marie Todd, lead investigator. “The bravery and courage they have shown is remarkable. Without them, McCurdy would not be behind bars today.
“While this sentence will never erase their pain, I hope it helps them move forward. McCurdy showed no remorse for the suffering he caused.”
“I urge anyone affected by abuse to come forward. You don’t have to suffer in silence.”
Victims or witnesses are urged to contact police on 101. Support is also available from ChildLine at 0800 11 11 or the NSPCC at 0808 800 5000 for adults affected.
