Island Roads Volunteers Transform Chillerton Village Hall Access!
Volunteers from Island Roads have stepped up to overhaul the access to Chillerton Village Hall. As part of their volunteer scheme, where staff get two paid days a year to aid local projects, the team answered a call from Chillerton and Gatcombe Community Association to improve off-street access for the young, elderly, and disabled.
Road Repairs and Drainage Make a Big Difference
The focus was on repairing the surrounding road, revamping the vehicle turning area, and fixing the troublesome roadside drainage system. The prior uneven, muddy, and stepped terrain had made it tough for wheelchair users, mobility scooters, and parents with buggies to reach the hall safely.
Community Voices Praise the Work
Gillian Belben, committee member at Chillerton and Gatcombe Community Association, said: “The building was adapted for disabled users, but access was a real problem. Thankfully, Island Roads volunteers sorted the issues. We’re really grateful.”
She added special thanks to team leader Paul Gibb-Narey for his expert advice on materials and planning. Gillian’s looking forward to Saturday’s market and café, where a 1-year-old and a 99-year-old resident will both enjoy the improved access.
Committee member Attridge called the work a “remarkable transformation.”
