Gurveer Bhandal, an 18-year-old, has been charged with the murder of Ashley Day, who was fatally stabbed at a party in Birmingham. Bhandal also faces charges of possessing a bladed article. The teenager was charged last night and is scheduled to appear before city magistrates today
The tragic incident unfolded at an apartment on Bradford Street in Digbeth, shortly after 6am on Thursday. The apartment had been used as a venue for a party that was promoted through social media platforms. Authorities are urging anyone who was present at the party or witnessed the events to come forward with information.
To facilitate the collection of information and footage related to the incident, an online portal has been established. The public can access the portal to provide any relevant details they may have. The link to the portal can be found in the article.
In a heart-wrenching tribute, Ashley’s family expressed their grief and shared fond memories of their “passionate and loving boy.” They described him as well-mannered and revealed his deep passion for football, highlighting his achievements at Newport football academy. Ashley had recently been accepted to study sports science at Brunel University and was eagerly looking forward to starting later this year. His family emphasized his role as a devoted older brother and a protector to his mother, younger brother, and extended family. They portrayed him as someone who radiated joy, possessed an infectious smile, and had a remarkable sense of humour. The family expressed their profound sadness and referred to Ashley as their “model son” while their hearts continued to ache.
Detective Inspector Jim Mahon, leading the investigation, assured the public that Ashley’s family is receiving support during this tragic time. While a suspect has been charged with the murder, Mahon believes that there may still be individuals who have information, photographs, or videos related to the party and the incident. He urged anyone present at the event to come forward and provide information to assist the investigation.
Two other individuals who were initially arrested as part of the investigation have been released without facing further action.
