Fire Claims Lives of Two Children and a Woman in Cambridge – UKNIP

Cambridge was struck by a devastating flat fire in Sackville Close, King’s Hedges, resulting in the loss of two young lives and a woman. The flames quickly engulfed the two-story maisonette in the early hours of Friday leaving a man critically injured as he managed to escape. More than 30 firefighters responded to the emergency, working tirelessly to contain the blaze.

Despite the valiant efforts of the rescue team, two children, a boy, and a girl, could not be saved and succumbed to their injuries in the hospital. Additionally, a woman in her 30s tragically lost her life at the scene. The incident has left the local community reeling with shock and grief.

Authorities were alerted to the fire at 01:08 on Friday morning, and upon arrival, firefighters were met with billowing smoke emanating from the ground and first floor of the maisonette. Swift action by the firefighters prevented the fire from spreading to neighbouring homes, averting further casualties.

Area Commander Stuart Smith expressed the profound impact of this heartbreaking incident, stating, “This is a devastating and deeply upsetting incident that will touch many people. Our thoughts are with the relatives, friends, and neighbours of the family. It’s just heartbreaking.” The fire safety team has been actively engaged in the community, offering information and reassurance to residents, with plans to return next week to further address fire safety concerns.

An investigation into the cause of the fire has been launched, aiming to shed light on the tragic incident. The East of England Ambulance Service responded with urgency, dispatching multiple resources, including ambulances, hazardous area response teams, and air ambulances from both East Anglian and Essex and Herts. One woman was pronounced dead at the scene, while the injured man, an infant, and an older child were rushed to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in serious conditions. An infant from a neighbouring property was also transported for further assessment and care.
