Tragic Flat Fire in Cambridge Claims Three Lives
Cambridge was rocked by a fatal fire in a two-story maisonette on Sackville Close, King’s Hedges. The blaze broke out in the early hours of Friday, engulfing the building and killing two young children and a woman. More than 30 firefighters battled the flames as a man escaped critically injured.
Children and Woman Lost in Devastating Blaze
Despite heroic rescue efforts, a boy and a girl later died in hospital from their injuries. A woman in her 30s was pronounced dead at the scene. The local community is left in shock and mourning this heartbreaking tragedy.
Firefighters Praise Swift Response That Prevented Spread
The alarm was raised at 1:08am when thick smoke poured from the ground and first floors. Fire crews contained the flames quickly, preventing the fire from spreading to neighbouring homes and averting further casualties.
“This is a devastating and deeply upsetting incident that will touch many people. Our thoughts are with the relatives, friends, and neighbours of the family. It’s just heartbreaking,” said Area Commander Stuart Smith.
Ongoing Investigation and Emergency Response
An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway. The East of England Ambulance Service sent multiple units, including hazardous response teams and air ambulances. Besides the victims, an infant from a nearby property was also taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital for assessment. Fire safety teams are working closely with the community and will return next week to offer further support and advice.
