Accrington Man Jailed for Deadly M66 Crash
Adil Iqbal from Hope Street, Accrington, has been slapped with a 12-year prison term after pleading guilty to death by dangerous driving. He also received a 13-year driving ban following his shocking court appearance on Wednesday, July 19.
Reckless BMW Driver Sparks Fatal Collision
The horror unfolded on Saturday, May 13, 2023, just after 3pm on the southbound M66 in Bury. Greater Manchester Police rushed to the scene of a serious crash involving two vehicles.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing Iqbal weaving recklessly through heavy traffic. In his black BMW, he dangerously sped, overtaking and undertaking cars at high speed for a considerable stretch before losing control.
Pregnant Victim and Her Children Trapped in Wreckage
Iqbal’s excessive speed caused his car to spin out and smash into the stationary vehicle of victim Frankie Hough, parked on the hard shoulder. Tragically, Frankie was pregnant at the time.
After the impact, Iqbal escaped his wrecked car. Meanwhile, Frankie and her three children were trapped inside unconscious—except for her two-year-old son, who cried desperately for his mum.
Heroic passers-by rushed to free the family before emergency crews arrived. Frankie suffered life-threatening injuries and was rushed to hospital with her children. Sadly, she died two days later on May 15.
Police Condemn Reckless Driving
Iqbal was arrested at the scene for causing serious injury by dangerous driving, charged, and put into custody immediately.
Detective Constable Richie Hughes of GMP’s Road Policing Unit said: “Our thoughts remain with Frankie’s family and children affected by this tragedy. Iqbal’s blatant disregard for the safety of others has had devastating consequences.”
