Tragedy struck in the northern Mexican border city of San Luis Rio Colorado as a bar became the target of a suspected arson attack, resulting in the loss of eleven lives. According to authorities in the state of Sonora, the incident occurred after an expelled patron returned to the bar with a Molotov cocktail, setting it ablaze.
Preliminary findings from Sonora state prosecutors indicate that the suspect was a young male who was heavily intoxicated at the time of the attack, which took place in the early hours of Saturday. The individual had reportedly been ejected from the bar due to his disrespectful behaviour towards women inside.
The suspect, in a fit of rage, returned to the bar and hurled a Molotov cocktail at its doors, causing a devastating fire that claimed the lives of eleven people. Among the deceased, four were women, and four others were injured and are currently receiving medical treatment at a hospital.
Gustavo Romulo Salas, the state attorney general, shared heartbreaking details during a press conference, revealing that one of the female victims was a U.S. citizen, likely with dual Mexican nationality. Tragically, one of the victims was a young person of only 17 years old.
In the aftermath of the horrific incident, authorities acted swiftly and apprehended the suspect responsible for the attack. The mayor of San Luis Rio Colorado, Santos Gonzalez, confirmed that the man has been arrested by the police.
