Fatal Crash Shuts Key Kent Road for Hours
A deadly collision in the early hours has slammed shut the major A249 road connecting the M2 and Sittingbourne. The stretch near the Keycol Hill roundabout remains closed both ways while police carry out investigations.
One Dead After Hit-and-Run Near Keycol Hill
Just after 1am on Wednesday, emergency crews raced to the scene of a tragic incident where a person was struck by a vehicle. Despite their efforts, the victim was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.
Kent Police and other emergency services were dispatched shortly after 1 a.m.,” confirmed a spokesperson. “Our thoughts are with the family at this difficult time.”
The death is currently being treated as unexplained but not suspicious. The coroner has been informed, and specially trained officers are supporting the deceased’s family.
Police Hunting Witnesses and Dashcam Footage
Authorities have set up a cordon around the scene and brought in their collision investigators. The Kent Police drone unit is providing aerial footage to help with the inquiry.
Investigators are appealing to anyone who witnessed the crash or has dashcam footage to come forward urgently.
Long Road Closure Expected
Highways England confirmed the A249 is closed between the A2 at Key Street and the B2006, with no estimated reopening time yet. Traffic officers are helping manage the heavy disruption.
“The road will likely remain closed throughout the morning as police complete their investigation,” said a Highways England rep.
