Sudanese Refugee Dies in Suspected Suicide on Calais Railway
A young male refugee from Sudan tragically lost his life after being hit by a train in Calais at around 10:50am. Witnesses say the man stepped deliberately in front of the speeding train despite the driver sounding the horn frantically before being unable to stop.
Emergency Services Unable to Save Victim
Emergency crews rushed to the scene but could not save the man, who was reported to be in his thirties. The incident occurred on a level crossing at the edge of Calais, near where many refugees stay and where aid groups regularly distribute food.
Known to Local Volunteers, Struggling with Life in Calais
The victim was well known to local volunteers working with displaced people in the area. He had expressed deep struggles with the harsh conditions and persecution faced by refugees seeking safety and respect. He had even confided he no longer wanted to live.
