Officers on patrol in The Meadows noticed a strong odour of cannabis coming from a passing van.
At around 2.45 a.m. on Tuesday, police followed the vehicle to Meadows Way, where they stopped it and searched it (31 January).
More than 50 mature cannabis plants were discovered packed inside the van, which was discovered to be driving without the proper documentation.
Following additional investigation, police linked the drugs seized during the stop to an industrial unit on Crossgate Drive in The Meadows.
The address was gained entry to around 8 a.m. the same day, resulting in an enormous haul of cannabis being discovered inside.
In the unit, approximately 550 plants were discovered growing, while electricity was dangerously bypassed to power the massive cannabis farm.
Police have since removed and destroyed the seized drugs, which are estimated to be worth more than £450,000.
A 28-year-old man has been charged with producing Class B drugs, possessing Class B drugs with the intent to supply them, committing fraud by false representation, and driving without insurance.
He is scheduled to appear in court later today at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court (2 February).
This was a fantastic result that was sparked by officers conducting a routine patrol of The Meadows area,” said Detective Sergeant Simon Carter of Nottinghamshire Police.
The initial stop on its own would’ve represented a great piece of police work, but after carrying out further inquiries we were also able to shut down a much larger cannabis grow.
Not only have we taken a large number of drugs off the streets of Nottingham, but we have also prevented criminals from making a large sum of money through crime.
The result also shows our commitment to ensuring those who think they can bring drugs into our city will be stopped and brought to justice.
When you consider the huge fire hazard they pose to the surrounding community, cannabis grows like the one shut down here are a blight on society and put people in danger.
