Swindon Woman Attacks Paramedic, Leaves Him Unconscious with Broken Eye Socket
Vanessa Blakey, 25, from Swindon, has been handed a suspended jail sentence after viciously assaulting a paramedic. The shocking attack happened last March when emergency worker Nick Brown was called to help her.
Paramedic Punched, Knocked Out Cold
When Nick arrived on the scene, Vanessa suddenly punched him in the head. He crashed into the front of the Rapid Response Vehicle and was knocked unconscious. Nick was rushed to hospital with a broken eye socket.
Another paramedic, Callum, was also hurt during the attack — suffering broken ribs after being kicked.
Guilty Plea and Sentence
On February 2, 2023, at Swindon Magistrates Court, Vanessa pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm and assaulting an emergency worker. She was sentenced to 12 months in prison, suspended for two years. She must also pay £100 compensation and attend rehabilitation.
Paramedic Speaks Out: “No One Should Fear Doing Their Job”
“When I woke up on the floor, I couldn’t believe what had happened,” said Nick Brown. “Nobody should be afraid to do their job, especially those in the medical field. Anyone who assaults a member of the emergency services should be ashamed of themselves.”
“We get verbal abuse regularly, but thankfully physical attacks are rarer — body-worn cameras help reduce the risk.”
“I hope this prosecution sends a strong message that assaulting emergency workers won’t be tolerated.”
“I’m grateful for the support I received from SWASFT, the police, and the Great Western Hospital. I also commend Callum’s quick thinking, which helped minimise the damage despite his injuries.”
SWASFT Demands Respect for Emergency Workers
Mike Pavey, Crime and Violence Reduction Officer at SWASFT, slammed the attack: “What happened to Nick and Callum is shocking and completely unacceptable. This was an unprovoked, vicious assault on a crew just trying to help.”
“Our teams face huge physical, mental, and emotional pressure without patients attacking them.”
“We urge the public to treat emergency workers with the dignity and respect they deserve. Help us to help you.”
