UK Launches Emergency Alerts to Save Lives
The UK government has rolled out Emergency Alerts, a vital new service that warns you if there’s a danger close by. These alerts pop up on your mobile phone or tablet, guiding you on how to stay safe when seconds count.
When Will You Get an Alert?
- Severe flooding
- Fires
- Extreme weather
- Public health emergencies
Only the emergency services, government departments, and public bodies responsible for emergencies can send these alerts.
What Happens When Your Phone Flashes?
- Your phone may blast a loud siren-like sound—even if it’s on silent
- It might vibrate to grab your attention
- The alert could be read out loud
The noise and vibration last about 10 seconds. Alerts include a phone number or link to the GOV.UK site for more info.
How to Respond to Emergency Alerts
Stop what you’re doing immediately and follow the alert’s instructions. If you’re driving or riding, pull over safely before checking your phone or ask a passenger to read the alert.
Remember, using a hand-held device while driving is illegal.
Who Gets Emergency Alerts?
Alerts target your current location, not where you live or work. You do NOT need to switch on location services to receive them. And if you don’t have a compatible device, don’t worry — emergency services will warn you by other means.
Accessibility & Languages
If you’re deaf, hard of hearing, blind or partially sighted, audio and vibration signals will alert you. Alerts are sent in English, and in Wales, they may also come in Welsh.
