Women Take Firm Hold in Finance Senior Roles

The finance sector is smashing the glass ceiling, with the latest Women in Finance Charter report showing a leap in female senior managers. The 2022 figures reveal a sharp rise in women holding top jobs, signalling real change at last.

The Numbers Tell the Story

  • Female senior representation jumped to 35% in 2022, climbing from a flat 33% in the previous two years.
  • Nearly three-quarters (77%) of firms signed up to the Charter boosted or maintained their percentage of women in senior roles.
  • Ambitions are rising too – half of the Charter signatories now aim for at least 40% female leadership.
  • Of the 73 companies with targets for 2022, 44 have hit their goals. The 29 who missed mostly came close, within five percentage points or appointments.
  • For the first time ever, the top 25% of Charter firms have 40% or more women in senior management.

Charter Champions Speak Out

“There is much to celebrate this year,” said Treasury Lords Minister Baroness Penn. “Signatories have recommitted with renewed focus, analysing data, setting high targets, and inspiring tomorrow’s leaders.”

“This report is a marker of strong progress but a reminder against complacency. Together, we can keep the sector competitive and innovative.”

Amanda Blanc, Aviva CEO and Government Women in Finance Champion, added:

“A 2% rise is good progress, but we need to speed up if lasting change is to happen. Leaders are now accountable like never before, and data is driving results.”

“Congrats to the quarter of firms with 40% female senior management – but the race isn’t over.”

Yasmine Chinwala OBE from New Financial revealed:

“The Charter works because it treats female representation as a business imperative with targets, reporting, and pay linked to performance.”

“64% of firms now say pay-linked diversity targets are effective – up from 53% in 2021. This makes diversity a boardroom priority, not just an HR issue.”

What’s Next?

Since its launch in 2016, the Women in Finance Charter has pushed the finance sector to raise the bar. With over 400 signatories now on board, the drive for 40% women in senior roles is catching fire – but there’s still a long way to go.
