Government Splash £9m on Farming Tech to Boost Productivity and Cut Emissions

The UK government is pouring over £9 million into three groundbreaking farming projects designed to ramp up productivity, slash environmental damage, and toughen up the sector against climate threats.

Revolutionary Farming Innovations Get Green Light

The cash boost will fund a robotic crop harvesting system for horticulture, an autonomous robot that changes cows’ bedding to improve their health and output, and a new eco-friendly approach to growing spuds.

These projects come under the Large R&D Partnership competition, part of a wider £270 million Farming Innovation Programme. A second round for applications is already open, giving more innovators the chance to get involved.

Huge Government Backing for Farming Future

This wave of funding is part of a larger £600 million investment over three years aimed at helping farmers improve animal welfare, embrace innovation, and boost productivity. The money is carved out of a £2.4 billion annual farming budget that will remain steady throughout the current Parliament.

Alongside the Environmental Land Management schemes, these grants will drive long-term sustainable food production and support efforts to reverse the decline in nature, as outlined in the government’s Environmental Improvement Plan.

Farming Minister Mark Spencer said: “It’s important that we fund projects like these – and those still to come in future rounds – as we support farmers to deliver sustainable food production and protect the environment. Innovation, research and development will help keep the sector at the cutting edge of technology as we look into the future.”

The Cutting-Edge Projects Set to Change Farming

  • AGRI-OPENCORE – Led by APS Produce, this £3.8 million project aims to fast-track robotic harvesting in horticulture, tackling crippling labour shortages. It will create the world’s first 1 platform (software and hardware) for agri-robotics, enabling multiple organisations to collaborate and demo tech on English farms. The project hopes to bring forward robotic picking adoption by two years. Phil Pearson, APS Produce, called it “an exciting, and vital project for the fresh produce industry.”
  • AG ARC – With £2.5 million, Garnett Farm Engineering is developing an autonomous cow bedding robot. Clean, dry bedding is crucial to prevent mastitis, a dangerous udder infection. This smart robot will use sensors to monitor and optimise bedding dispensing, improving cow welfare and saving farmers money. Andrew Garnett said: “We look forward to collaborating with the University of Liverpool to revolutionise cattle bedding.”
  • Potato-LITE – Awarded £2.83 million, this project aims to transform potato farming by reducing tillage intensity—cutting costs and environmental harm. A partnership including PepsiCo, McCain, and leading universities will develop new machinery and systems to improve soil health and reduce greenhouse gases. Shaunagh Slack of PepsiCo said: “This four-year project will enable regenerative agriculture practices and help us work towards a net zero future.”
