Tragic Teen Stabbed to Death in Tonbridge Park
20-year-old Thomas Waugh was enjoying a night out with friends in Tonbridge Racecourse Park in the early hours of 19 August 2022. But the evening turned deadly when two strangers approached them, sparking a chilling robbery that ended with Thomas fatally stabbed.
The Fatal Robbery
Rocco Mustafa, armed with a large knife, and a teenage accomplice confronted Thomas and his two friends, demanding their phones. The trio tried to negotiate, but when Thomas offered cash instead and fled, the situation escalated.
While Thomas ran to distract the attackers with a stick, his terrified friends gave up a gold chain, cigarettes, and £5 to avoid violence. Sadly, Mustafa caught Thomas in a nearby car park and stabbed him in the torso. Paramedics arrived but couldn’t save him.
Swift Police Action and Arrests
Detectives linked Mustafa to the crime through a call he made to his mother, Claire White, who went to Tonbridge to collect him after the attack. Police soon arrested Mustafa and the teenage boy on 21 August. The Crown Prosecution Service charged both with murder, two robberies, and attempted robbery just days later.
White was also charged with assisting an offender. On 27 January 2023, Mustafa pleaded guilty at maidstone/" title="Maidstone" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Maidstone Crown Court. The teenage accomplice pleaded not guilty but was convicted of all charges on 11 April. White was found guilty of helping an offender the same day.
Justice for Thomas
Mustafa, 18, and Claire White, 48, both from Coulsdon, London, along with the teenage boy, await sentencing.
Senior Investigating Officer DCI Neil Kimber said: “This was a shocking incident in which a young man lost his life trying to protect his friends. Thomas showed bravery that contrasts sharply with the violent actions of these teenagers. Their appalling behaviour has left a family mourning a needless loss. Mustafa’s mother’s conduct was also deplorable and she should be thoroughly ashamed.”
He added, “I hope the upcoming sentences bring some closure to Thomas’s loved ones following this tragic death.”
