Eastbourne’s Repeat Shoplifter Jailed for 32 Weeks

Adam Summerford, 33, a notorious shoplifter with no fixed address, has been locked up for 32 weeks. The career criminal targeted businesses across Eastbourne Old Town, hitting well-known stores like Co-op, Sainsbury’s, and The Post Office between November 2022 and January 2023.

Caught Red-Handed on CCTV

Staff quickly spotted Summerford during his thefts, recognising him easily. CCTV footage captured him in the act multiple times. He was arrested and charged with 11 counts of theft. Despite already being on a suspended sentence for similar offences, Summerford pleaded guilty to all charges in Brighton Magistrates’ Court on March 20 and was immediately remanded in custody.

Along with his prison time, Summerford has been ordered to pay £515 in compensation to the victims.

Police Praise Teamwork Against Crime

Police Community Support Officer Julian Williams from the Eastbourne Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “Summerford is well-known for his previous shoplifting offences in the area and was easily identified by staff who reported the crimes.”

“His arrest and subsequent remand were crucial to stop him from striking again and harming our community.”

Sussex Police’s dedicated Business Crime Team works closely with the Business Crime Reduction Partnership and Safer Sussex Business Partnership, alongside local businesses and customers, to fight crime across the county.

Commissioner Demands Tough Action on Shoplifting

Sussex Police & Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne, who launched the Safer Sussex Business Partnership in 2020, slammed the offender’s actions.

“This prolific thief caused major distress to shop staff and customers, thinking he could get away with it time after time.”

“A prison sentence sends a strong message and highlights the effective teamwork between retailers, Sussex Police, and the courts.”

“This will reassure residents and visitors that Eastbourne’s high streets are becoming safer places for everyone.”
