Harlow Allotment Sabotaged: Salt Dump Ruins Food for Needy Families

Carly Burd, a dedicated volunteer feeding low-income families in Harlow, Essex, was left “heartbroken” after discovering salt dumped in the soil of an allotment where local kids had just planted 300 onions.

The sabotage threatened months of hard work providing fresh food for struggling families. But Carly’s plea for help sparked an overwhelming response, with donations soaring from £2,500 to a staggering £190,000 in just 24 hours.

Community Rallies Around Carly After Vandalism

Since September last year, Carly, a mother of three with multiple sclerosis and lupus, has been handing out free food kits grown in her allotment and garden to over 1,600 people on low incomes, benefits, or pensions. The salt attack was a cruel blow.

“I’ve never been so hurt in my life. It was devastating… mindless vandalism,” Carly said, sharing a video on TikTok seen over 900,000 times in one day.

Support flooded in from all corners. Football legend Gary Lineker tweeted, “Why would you ever do something like that?” and donated to Carly’s fundraiser. Entrepreneurs like Steven Bartlett also pitched in thousands.

“I’m literally at a loss for words; I’ve never been so taken aback,” Carly said, overwhelmed by the response.

Police Investigate, Carly Eyes New Equipment to Rebuild

Essex Police confirmed they plan to visit the allotment to offer support and investigate any criminal activity. Harlow Council condemned the vandalism but praised the community spirit rallying around Carly.

With the flood of donations, Carly plans to buy vital equipment like a rotavator to restore the allotments herself. This will help her restore food supplies to families who desperately need them.

“I can get all the allotments in order and get this running again – it will be so beneficial to our community,” she stated.

Why Salt is Poison to Plants

Guy Barter from the Royal Horticultural Society explained the damage: “Salt causes osmotic stress in plant roots, stopping water intake and causing wilted, stunted plants.”

While salt doesn’t always permanently ruin soil, it can take time and a lot of water to flush out, especially after being dumped in heaps, possibly damaging this vital community resource.

Carly’s Vision: From Crisis to Charity

Carly is now fast-tracking her allotment project into a registered charity to expand efforts and provide more organic food to Harlow’s most vulnerable.

“We’re just normal people from Harlow. To be in this position is a bit perplexing, but this help means so much. I’m not going to squander it. It’s more than a dream realised; it means we can help people,” she said.

This incredible grassroots effort shows how community spirit can triumph over senseless sabotage, feeding hope along with food to those who need it most.
