Van Driver Jailed After Deadly M6 Crash
Marcin Szewczyk, 43, from Stockport, has been locked up for seven and a half years. The Chester Crown Court handed down the sentence on Tuesday, 18 April, after Szewczyk pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving.
He also faces a five-year driving ban, which will start after he is released from prison.
Fatal Collision on the M6
Just after midnight on Saturday 30 October 2021, Szewczyk was behind the wheel of a white Mercedes Sprinter van on the M6 between junctions 17 and 18, near Middlewich. He crashed into the back of a stationary Kia Sportage, which was stuck in heavy traffic with hazard lights flashing. The impact pushed the Kia into a nearby HGV.
Tragically, Suzanne Taylor, a rear seat passenger in the Kia, died instantly at the scene. Her daughter, seated in the front, suffered serious injuries and underwent surgery at University Hospital North Midlands. She was discharged two months later.
Under The Influence and Unlicensed
Police arrested Szewczyk at the scene. Toxicology tests revealed he had amphetamines in his system. He was also found to be driving without a valid licence — his Polish licence had been confiscated and declared invalid.
Witnesses told officers the van had been weaving all over the road. Dashcam footage from other drivers was crucial in convicting Szewczyk. GPS records showed the van had been on the road for over 22 hours, covering more than 450 miles before the crash.
Police and Family Speak Out
“Szewczyk’s reckless driving and decision to keep going while fatigued and drugged has devastated Suzanne’s family,” said PC Faye Clarke.
“He ignored the law, endangered lives, and had plenty of chances to stop but chose not to. We thank all who helped build this case and get him off the roads.”
Following the sentence, Suzanne’s family said: “We are pleased with the custodial sentence, though nothing can bring mum back. We want to move forward, keeping mum in our thoughts. Thanks to Cheshire Police and the investigation team for their support and hard work.”
