Big Issue North Shuts Print Edition but Vendors Still Set to Thrive
The iconic Big Issue North magazine is ending its print run. But fear not, street vendors battling poverty and homelessness across the North will still earn cash selling Big Issue UK. They keep every penny they make.
Vendors will visit the same offices and get support from the familiar Big Issue North team. The only switch? The magazine they buy. They’ll continue to purchase magazines for £2 and sell for £4 on the streets.
Support for Vendors Remains Strong
While buying their magazines, vendors receive vital help on housing, employment, healthcare, and finances. This lifeline of guidance won’t be lost.
Big Issue North Forced to Fold Print Due to Pandemic Fallout
Since 1993, Big Issue North thrived as an independent publication spotlighting northern life and culture. But pandemic-hit foot traffic and soaring print, paper, and energy costs have made continuing print financially impossible.
To keep regional voices alive, stories will now be shared via the Street News app, social media, and web channels. Big Issue UK and the global International Street Paper Network will also carry key content, shining a light on marginalised communities.
Leaders Speak Out on Tough Decision
Fay Selvan, CEO of Big Issue North: “We could not be prouder of the impact the magazine has made—helping marginalised people work their way out of poverty and telling powerful community stories.”
“We explored all options but ending Big Issue North print to offer vendors the national Big Issue magazine is the best way to maximize income opportunities.”
“Our support will continue through the Big Issue North Trust charity to do even more for those in need.”
“This was a tough call, but it ensures people facing poverty or homelessness in the North get support and hope for the future.”
Kevin Gopal, Big Issue North editor: “This is a sad day for independent northern publishing and marks the harsh reality for much of the media. But I’m grateful for 16 incredible years of storytelling thanks to our team, contributors, and supporters.”
“I hope our journalism made a difference and that vendors continue getting the crucial support they deserve.”
What’s Next for Vendors and Readers?
A special souvenir issue of Big Issue North will hit the streets from Monday 8 May. Then from 15 May, northern vendors will sell the national Big Issue UK magazine. The hustle continues, stronger than ever.
