Newborn’s Body Discovered Sparks Major Probe
Police were called in after the tragic discovery of a newborn baby’s body in a private garden on the morning of December 12, 2020.
The Major Crime Investigation Team (MCIT) launched a complex and lengthy inquiry, gathering crucial evidence.
Charges Change from Murder to Infanticide
Initially charged with murder in October 2022, Barron’s case took a turn following detailed medical assessments.
Today, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) accepted her plea to infanticide. Sentencing is set for July 14.
What is Infanticide Under UK Law?
Infanticide applies when a mother causes the death of her child under 12 months old, while her mind is disturbed due to childbirth.
Police and CPS Comment on the Case
“This is a very tragic and deeply upsetting case,” said Detective Superintendent Gary Haskins. “It has profoundly impacted the local community and everyone involved. We agree that infanticide is the most proportionate charge under the circumstances.”
Iain Jenkins of CPS added, “New expert medical reports led us to reconsider the charge. After thorough review, infanticide is the most appropriate outcome, reflecting the defendant’s health at the time.”
