Serial Arsonist Omar Omar Jailed for £4.5 Million Car Dealership Blaze Spree
A Nottinghamshire man has been locked up for a dozen years after torching a car dealership and nearby businesses in a fiery vendetta that burnt a £4.5 million hole in the local economy.
Multiple Fires Sparked in Christmas Day Attack
Omar Omar, 40, a car wash owner from Bramcote, targeted the dealership on Lowdham Road, Gunthorpe, four times throughout 2022. His most brazen move came on Christmas Day, setting fire to two portacabins at the dealership and then torching a service station on the A46 in Cropwell Bishop minutes later.
The fires didn’t just damage buildings but also destroyed vehicles and wrecked offices. The chaos stretched from January, when Omar made his first failed attempt, right through to December.
Revenge Fueled Arson Spree Causes Massive Damage
- January 15 fire wiped out a building beside the forecourt and damaged cars.
- August blaze burned three vehicles and an office on the dealership site.
- Christmas Day infernos devastated portacabins and a nearby service station.
All told, the destruction and lost earnings tipped the scale at an eye-watering £4.5 million.
Forensics Snare Omar’s DNA at Fire Sites
Police investigation was swift and meticulous. Forensics discovered Omar’s DNA on a hammer at one scene and found a burnt jacket matching CCTV footage hidden in his home. Initially denying everything, Omar finally admitted to four counts of arson and one of attempted arson in court on August 10, 2023.
At Nottingham Crown Court on September 22, Judge sentenced him to 12 years behind bars.
“Omar’s actions were reckless in the extreme and motivated by revenge and his intention to try and destroy the livelihoods of other business owners he was having issues with,” said Detective Constable Chloe Baugh.
“The financial and emotional toll on the victims has been immense. We’re relieved a hefty sentence has been handed down.”
