18-Year-Old Jailed for Brutal Attempted Rape in Greatstone Woodland

Jack Usher, 18, has been locked up for six years and nine months after admitting attempted rape. The horrific attack happened on 13 May, prompting a swift and determined investigation by Kent and Essex Serious Crime detectives.

Attack on Woodland Path

The victim was walking near Dunes Road, Greatstone, just after 5pm when Usher suddenly appeared from behind. He struck her repeatedly on the head, knocking her to the ground. Usher then threatened to rape her, trying to drag her into nearby bushes.

Showing remarkable courage, the woman fought him off and escaped, immediately contacting the police.

Investigation and Arrest

  • Police launched a thorough probe, reviewing all CCTV footage in the area.
  • Usher was identified as the suspect and arrested at his New Romney home on 18 May.
  • He was charged the very next day.

Justice Served

At Canterbury Crown Court in July, Usher admitted attempted rape. On 17 October, he was sentenced to six years and nine months in jail, followed by an extended six-year licence period. He is now on the Sex Offender Register indefinitely.

“This attack would have been terrifying for the victim and I would like to praise her courage in supporting our investigation and this prosecution,” said Detective Inspector Ross Gurden.

“I hope the quick arrest, charge, and jail term now imposed reassure the local community, who must have found the incident very concerning.”

“Tackling violence against women and girls is Kent Police’s top priority, and bringing offenders like Jack Usher to justice is key.”
