Man Arrested After Bootle Shooting and High-Speed Crash
A man has been arrested on suspicion of firearm possession following a non-injury shooting last night in Bootle. The drama unfolded on Friday, December 8, around 10pm on Wolfenden Avenue.
Shots Fired After Suspicious Drop-Off
Eyewitnesses say a man was dropped off by a dark-coloured car on Wolfenden Avenue. Moments later, two individuals on an electric bike approached him, brandished a suspected firearm, and fired a single shot before speeding off towards Southport Road. Thankfully, no one was hurt, but officers found clear evidence a gun had been fired.
Police Chase Ends in Serious Crash Injuries
Just 45 minutes later, police on patrol in Walton spotted a black Ford Focus acting suspiciously. When officers tried to stop it, the driver sped off, leading to a short chase. The getaway ended in a collision with a blue Renault Captur on Balliol Road.
The Renault’s driver suffered serious rib injuries and remains hospitalized, while a passenger sustained a severe arm injury.
Drinking, Driving & Guns: Police Believe Incidents Linked
Police initially arrested a 47-year-old man for drink-driving and other driving offences. He was treated for a hip injury. But after further investigation, officers now believe the collision and shooting are connected. The suspect has also been charged with possession of a firearm.
Detective Inspector Gavin Mulcahy urged locals to step forward with any information. “Gun crime has no place on our streets,” he said. “We’ll do everything in our power to catch those responsible and keep our communities safe.”
