Supermarkets and Banks Crack Down on No-Mask Shoppers

Big-name retailers like Tesco and Sainsbury’s are stepping up enforcement on face masks as Covid cases surge. Shops across the UK are now enforcing a strict ‘No mask – No entry’ rule, pushing shoppers to comply with government guidelines or face being turned away.

No Mask? No Shopping!

With the NHS under pressure and a new Covid variant spreading fast, supermarkets won’t tolerate mask defiers. Sainsbury’s has tightened policies, allowing only one member per household and checking compliance before entry. Tesco confirms staff will refuse entry to anyone without face coverings—though those with legitimate exemptions can use a sunflower lanyard to signal this.

“We remain understanding and are trained to support you and allow entry,” Tesco said. “If you forget your mask, free disposable ones are available at the door.”

Shop Staff Backed By Government and Police

Health Secretary Matt Hancock made it clear: shop workers can refuse entry to customers ignoring mask rules. Worse, police can be called if people still refuse to comply. Hancock warned enforcement would be a last resort but insisted it’s necessary to keep everyone safe.

Banks Crack Down Too

It’s not just shops. Banks are toughening up on mask rules as well. Nationwide confirms branches can refuse service to anyone not wearing a mask. TSB warns it’s ready to take “appropriate action” against rule-breakers, including closing accounts for persistent offenders.

Exceptions and Warnings

The government urges the public to respect exemptions. People with anxiety, panic disorders, breathing difficulties, dementia, or those reliant on lip-reading, do not have to wear masks. Shops advise those exempt to display a sunflower lanyard to avoid hassle.
