Sussex Police Crack Down on Drunk and Drug Driving: 134 Arrests So Far
Sussex Police’s tough fight against drink and drug driving, dubbed Operation Limit, has already seen 134 arrests and up to 40 crashes halfway through the campaign. The crackdown, running from December 1 to January 1, targets reckless drivers putting lives at risk.
Crash Chaos Across Sussex
Drivers under the influence have caused a string of collisions across Sussex. Highlights include:
- A car smashing into a telegraph pole in Horsham
- Another crashing into a school zone warning sign
- A vehicle smashing through railings in Crawley
- One smashing into traffic lights in Lancing
Thankfully, no serious injuries have been reported, but the dangers are clear. Alcohol and drugs severely impair drivers, putting everyone on the roads in jeopardy.
Active Enforcement and Public Warning
Sussex officers have ramped up stop checks and roadblock operations, catching offenders in the act. Along the way, they’ve also nabbed drivers committing other offences. So far, the breakdown of arrests shows:
- 30 in Brighton and Hove
- 47 in East Sussex – including 11 in Hastings and St Leonards, 12 in Eastbourne, seven in Bexhill and Battle, and six in the Lewes area
- 57 in West Sussex – with 17 in Crawley and Horsham, and 11 in Adur and Worthing
Police Warn: Don’t Drink or Drive This Festive Season
“Drink or drug driving remains a leading cause of serious accidents,” said Superintendent Rachel Glenton, Head of Roads Policing. “Since the start of Operation Limit, many drivers have endangered their own lives and those of others. We urge everyone to plan ahead – get a taxi or walk home if you’ve been drinking, and report anyone you suspect is driving under the influence.”
The Christmas crackdown is part of Sussex Police’s year-round battle to keep roads safe. Convicted drink and drug drivers will be named publicly to deter others from taking deadly risks behind the wheel.
